October brings a key obligation for all freelancers in Portugal. You have until the 31st to submit your quarterly declaration to Social Security.

What is the quarterly declaration

The quarterly declaration is the mechanism that allows Social Security to adjust your monthly contributions based on the income you actually received. By declaring the values from the previous months, you ensure that your contribution calculation is fair and reflects your professional reality.

Deadline and how to proceed

According to technical information from the Order of Certified Accountants, the deadline for submitting this declaration is October 31, 2026. The process must be carried out exclusively through the Social Security Direct portal.

  • Access the Social Security Direct portal using your password or Digital Mobile Key.
  • Select the Employment option and then Freelancers.
  • Choose the Quarterly Declaration option.
  • Enter the income values obtained in July, August, and September 2026.
  • Confirm the data and submit the form.
Important note: Even if you had no income during the quarter, you must access the portal and declare zero. Failure to meet this deadline may result in penalties and the official setting of your contribution base.

Why accurate declaration matters

Declaring the correct values is essential to avoid surprises in the calculation of your future contributions. Remember that the contribution base is calculated based on 70% of your average quarterly income, so the accuracy of the data entered directly impacts the amount you will have to pay monthly.
